The Torre del Oro received this name because it was covered with a mixture of mortar, lime and pressed straw that shined under the sunlight with a golden hue. Hence its name Gold Tower has had many uses throughout its history. Originally it was used for surveillance, after the Christian conquest it served as chapel and later became a prison.
